Initiatives launched to mark half a year until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games!

 

24 January marks six months until the opening of the Tokyo 2020 Games, so Tokyo Metropolitan Government is undertaking various initiatives to celebrate this occasion and to build excitement in the run up to the Games, as detailed below.

1 Decorations on public transport

From late January trains with special liveries promoting the Games and featuring the official mascots will begin service.

(1) Railways

With the cooperation of rail operators, trains with special Olympic and Paralympic liveries will run on five lines.

The Rinkai Line

  • Period: Late January until the end of the Games
  • Number: 1 train composed of 10 carriages

Yurikamome

  • Period: Late January until the end of the Games
  • Number: 1 train composed of 6 carriages

Tokyo Metro Ginza Line

  • Period: Late January until the end of the Games
  • Number: 1 train composed of 6 carriages

Tokyo Monorail

  • Period: Early February until the end of the Games
  • Number: 1 train composed of 6 carriages

Keikyu Line

  • Period: Mid-March until the end of the Games
  • Number: 1 train composed of 8 carriages

※There are currently 10 trains composed of a total of 80 carriages fitted with special liveries on the Toei Oedo line, in addition to one train composed of four carriages on the Tama monorail.

(2) Buses

  • The number of Toei and privately operated buses fitted with special liveries will increase by 39, going from the current 49 vehicles to 88.
  • Eight new private operators will fit the liveries (Kanto Bus, Tokyu Bus, Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu, Kokusai Kogyo Bus, Tobu Bus, Nishitokyo Bus, Keisei Bus, Keisei Town Bus) in addition to the three operators which currently have them fitted (Odakyu Bus, Keio Bus, Seibu Bus)
  • Period: Late January until the end of the Games

Design 1: Expected to be used on 9 buses (currently used on 23)

2 Decorations for the rake in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) No. 1 Building

From Thursday 16 January, the rake on display on the second floor of the TMG No. 1 Building will be decorated with the Games mascots, Miraitowa and Someity.

3 Illuminations to mark half a year until the Games

To commemorate there being just half a year until the Games begin, on Friday 24 January the TMG Building will be illuminated.

Date and time

Friday 24 January 2020 from 6:00 to 11:00pm

Location

Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building (Shinjuku, Nishi-shinjuku 2-8-1)

Details

The illumination will alternate between projecting 5 Olympic colours (blue, yellow, black, green, and red) and the 3 Paralympic colours (red, blue and green) at intervals of 30 minutes.
