Continuing to Serve for the People, with the People
With the support of the citizens of Tokyo, I was recently re-elected to my third term as Governor of Tokyo.
While receiving your understanding and cooperation, for the past eight years, I have devoted myself wholeheartedly to the administration of Tokyo. In my first two terms in office, I led our city through the 1,200-day fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Games, which were the first Olympic and Paralympic Games in history to be held after a one-year postponement and without spectators. My administration has also made steady progress toward more than 90 percent of the 164 policy goals I laid out, when the 10 policy goals impacted by the pandemic are excluded.
The Grand Reform of Tokyo is unequivocally moving forward. However, our times are changing at a dizzying pace. Structural issues in society, including a declining birth rate and an aging, shrinking population, are growing more acute. This is no time to be letting up on the pursuit of reform. We will tackle any and all challenges head-on and work to further accelerate measures under the “Grand Reform of Tokyo 3.0,” my updated vision for metropolitan administration reform, in order to make Tokyo into the best city in the world.
A key pillar of my vision is “protecting the capital,” which encompasses protecting and improving the lives and livelihoods of the people of Tokyo and the economy to forge a brighter future. Through reinforcing various measures, such as the disaster preparedness of apartments and condominiums that nine million Tokyo residents call home, we will strengthen our city’s preparations against worsening natural disasters and against the impending threat of a major earthquake directly striking Tokyo. Under the banner of “children first,” we will further accelerate assistance for parenting and education to ensure that all children, who hold the future in their hands, are supported by society as a whole. Above all else, people are the source of Tokyo’s vitality. We will further refine policies to build a sustainable city where everyone, including women, older adults, and people with disabilities, can always shine.
I will continue striving to make Tokyo a better place for the people, with the people. Together, let’s build a brighter future.
Koike Yuriko
