Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2021: Entries open in the Cinematic Tokyo competition for films that share Tokyo’s charms with the world
In partnership with Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals and accredited by the Academy Awards, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is running the “Cinematic Tokyo” competition for short films with the theme of “Tokyo” that share Tokyo’s charms with the world. It is open to filmmakers in Japan and abroad. Entries are open once again this year, as detailed below.

About the Cinematic Tokyo competition
The competition is open to short films from the whole world that share Tokyo’s diverse charms with domestic and international audiences. Entries do not have to be filmed in Tokyo, as short films that are evocative of “Tokyo” or depict memories, impressions and even imaginary versions of the city are also welcome.
The nominated films will be screened at Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2021, scheduled to be held in June 2021.
Application guidelines
- It does not matter if entries have or have not yet have premiered in Japan.
- Submissions must be under 25 minutes, including end credits.
- Entries are welcome regardless of the year of country of production.
- Entries that feature languages other than English or Japanese should have dialog in those languages subtitled in English or Japanese.
- Entries are welcome regardless of genre.
- Entries may also be submitted for the official competition (a separate application is required).
