European Business Organization Worldwide Network Tokyo Meeting December 2, 2019
On December 2, Governor Koike gave a talk at the Tokyo Meeting of the European Business Organization Worldwide Network. She spoke about Tokyo’s initiatives to make Tokyo a global financial city and its efforts to promote active participation by women in society. She also talked about Tokyo’s preparation for the 2020 Games, as well as the legacy that the Games will leave behind.
The points she touched upon included the following:
- Establishing FinCity.Tokyo as the nation’s first financial promotion organization
- Creating the Tokyo Financial Award for those in the domestic and international financial world who are promoting ESG investment
- Attracting foreign companies that possess advanced technologies, as well as international finance firms including asset management and fintech
- Promoting tech solutions to social issues through the implementation of Society 5.0
- Actively promoting participation by women within the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in accordance with the principle of “inspiring by example”
- Establishing the Vision Network by Female Governors and Mayors, bringing women in executive and management positions together to create a vision for empowering women
- Having the Paralympic venues filled with spectators will be what proves the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games. To foster enthusiasm for the Paralympics, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has implemented “Team Beyond”, a project to support para-sports as well as para-sports experience program.
- Conducting a project to create medals by utilizing used mobile phones and other small electronic devices donated by people in Japan and overseas, as one of the models for a sustainable society
- Compared to the 1964 Games which left a legacy of urban infrastructure, the 2020 Games is expected to leave an intangible and important legacy to the future. The legacy should include establishing new working styles such as telework, leading to a much more productive society that is worker-friendly as well as promoting barrier-free measures for creating an inclusive society in preparation for an era of longevity (Choju).
- Using the 2020 Games as a springboard, Tokyo will evolve into a city of growth where people can live in peace and prosperity.
She concluded her speech by wishing that Tokyo will create innovation together with businesses from Europe, to bring about a sustainable society.
