Happy New Year! 2021
Happy New Year!
Exactly 60 years have passed since the birth of the still beloved tune Ue wo Muite Aruko (known as “Sukiyaki” outside of Japan). The song’s lyrics encourage listeners to “look up as they walk” when facing a sad or difficult situation. Ue wo Muite Aruko also served as a rallying song for recovery following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Taking this message to heart, I am determined to devote all of my efforts to the happiness of the people of Tokyo.
First, we must overcome the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will take every possible measure to contain this virus. I am truly grateful for your efforts and request your continued cooperation.
This summer, we aim to hold the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 with your understanding and support. We will advance preparations for a safe and secure Games, so that the Olympic flame, which currently burns in a small lantern, can shine as a symbol of hope for all.
I sincerely hope that this year brings you much happiness.
