Messages from the Organizers:
The Tokyo Odaiba Triennale 2025 will be held from next October in the Tokyo Bay Area, a natural waterfront and gateway to the world's oceans.
In 2025, Tokyo will be hosting the World Athletics Championships and Deaflympics, and we hope to welcome many visitors from around the world during this special year. Holding an international festival of the arts in the same year and in a historic place, where Japan once encountered new cultures at the end of the Edo period, will allow for an unconventional presentation of value and charms unique to Tokyo through art, elevating the city’s arts and culture to new heights.
Art breathes life into a city, enhances its appeal, and brings excitement and joy to each and every one of us. The questions for the future posed to us by cutting-edge art are the driving forces behind the creation of a better society and a sustainable city.
What kind of art will we encounter in 2025? How will the city of Tokyo be transformed? I am looking forward to finding out.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government
Governor KOIKE Yuriko
The Odaiba Triennale Organizing Committee, together with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is pleased to announce that the inaugural Tokyo Odaiba Triennale will be held in 2025.
Now synonymous with Tokyo Waterfront City, Odaiba (“batteries” or “forts”) is a newly developed and engineered neighborhood of the future, but also an area with a history dating back to the Edo period. Its origins lie in the islands that were constructed by the Tokugawa Shogunate as cannon batteries in order to protect Edo from foreign threats following the 1853 arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry’s ships in Tokyo Bay. The islands at the foot of the Rainbow Bridge and that of Daiba Park, which is now a historic site, were built as batteries, and the name given to them—Odaiba—remains in use today.
Odaiba is a beautiful waterfront setting where Edo and modern Tokyo coexist in curious harmony. The area’s appeal has been enhanced by the hosting of various entertainment events as well as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Building on this momentum, our aim is to organize an international art festival centered on contemporary art as a recurring event that will bring sustained vibrancy to the Daiba area and showcase the appeal of Tokyo to a global audience through the capabilities in art as well as entertainment that the city has cultivated over the years.
In an uncertain world filled with division and turmoil, the power of art is becoming more and more important. We hope to provide an opportunity for visitors to experience excitement, joy, pleasure, and solace through direct engagement with works of contemporary art, and to encourage awareness and contemplation. Nothing would make us happier than to realize an experience in Odaiba, in Tokyo, that allows people to come across new perspectives and values.
Our sincere hope is for the event to be a memorable occasion; one that reveals to the world the power of art and culture through diverse perspectives that open up new horizons and look to the future from Odaiba, this historic place that sparked Japan’s opening to the world.
