High School Teams Compete over Policies on Tokyo’s Future

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko on June 22 attended the final round of the “1st Tokyo Policy Championship,” a competition among high school teams to create policies with the help of digital technology to make Tokyo a better place to live. The event, organized by Junior Chamber International Tokyo, was held at the Yasuda Auditorium of the University of Tokyo.

“Today, I came to offer my support for a ‘policy championship’ exploring what would happen if we entrusted Tokyo to the next generation—and the generation after that,” Governor Koike told the event audience.

“When it comes to governing Tokyo, ‘DX’ is already a given. From now on, it’s the era of ‘AX’ (AI transformation),” she said. “I’m very much looking forward to seeing how the digital native generation will try to make Tokyo a more livable place.”

“With the rapid pace of progress we’re seeing today—in fields like AI, for example—things will have advanced to a level we can’t even imagine by five years from now,” Governor Koike noted. “That’s why I hope we won’t be constrained by the status quo, and that policies filled with your visions—such as ‘this is the kind of Tokyo I’d like to see’ —will be chosen.”
