Exploring the World of Baths

The Tokyo Metropolitan Library is holding a special exhibition titled " Exploring the World of Baths" exploring the history, culture, and health benefits of bathing in its many forms — from public bathhouses (sentō) and hot springs (onsen) to saunas — through a variety of perspectives. The exhibition runs through September 2, 2026, at the Multipurpose Hall on the fourth floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library.

In addition to books, magazines, and panel displays of rare historical materials from the library's own collection — including the Edo-period (1603-1868) woodblock prints (nishiki-e) and board games (sugoroku) — the exhibition also showcases bathing-related items on loan from collaboration organizations.

The exhibition is organized into five sections.

- "Bathing in Everyday Life" introduces familiar bathing customs, such as home bathing and Tokyo's public bathhouses.
- "Bathing on the Road" explores hot springs through travel guides, travelogues, and literary works.

"The Science of Bathing" features materials that examine mineral composition and health benefits from a scientific perspective. "Bathing Through Time" traces the history of Japanese bathing culture from ancient times to the modern era, while "Enjoying Bathing" showcases the many pleasures associated with bathing along with artistic works inspired by bath culture.

A hands-on corner will also be available, designed to help children with their summer vacation independent research projects.

During the exhibition period through September 2, the library will be closed on August 6 and 21. Admission is free. All exhibition materials are in Japanese only.
