2025 Tokyo War Dead Memorial Service
On August 15, Governor Koike attended Tokyo’s 2025 memorial service for the war dead held at Bunkyo Civic Hall.
In her address, Governor Koike stated, "On behalf of the citizens of Tokyo, I offer my sincere condolences to the souls of all those who lost their lives in World War II. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the war’s end. After eight decades, many people in Japan now belong to generations that have never experienced war. It is our solemn duty to reflect on the hardships endured by those before us and to pass on the irreplaceable value of peace to future generations.”
She continued: “For the first time, we invited junior high and high school students—those who will lead the next generation—to attend this memorial service. We hope the experience will inspire them to reflect deeply on peace and carry those thoughts into their daily lives.”
The governor also addressed current global challenges: "Around the world, we see growing instability, including the invasion of Ukraine and ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Japan’s security environment is now more severe and complex than ever since the end of the war. We must never repeat the tragedy of war.”
“In addition to global uncertainty, we face multiple crises—climate change, energy and food insecurity, and natural disasters. To overcome these challenges, we need unity, not division. I believe that by joining forces and acting with determination, the international community can build a brighter future.”
She concluded, “I solemnly vow to pass on a peaceful world—full of dreams and hope—as a sustainable legacy to the children who will shape our future."
