Opening Ceremony for the ‘Oishii Farm Open Innovation Center’

On August 5, Governor Koike attended the opening ceremony for the “Oishii Farm Open Innovation Center” in Hamura, western Tokyo.

The governor stated, “Tokyo is one of the world’s leading consumer markets and can serve as a perfect example of urban farming in which crops and food can be delivered immediately after production. Urban farming holds great potential and offers the huge advantage of using minimal space and resources. However, we face many challenges, including adapting to recent climate anomalies and a shortage of workers. From the standpoint of food security, too, this initiative is a matter of urgency.

“Plant factories can produce safe, reliable, high-value-added, and delicious food by using cutting-edge robotics. Given that, they have the potential to present a key solution to the challenges Tokyo faces. Taking on the challenge of innovation will create a bright future. So, we look forward to working hard with you toward this goal,” the governor said.
