2026 Kumamoto Earthquake Support Coordination Meeting (3rd)

Governor Koike on July 30 attended the third meeting to coordinate Tokyo’s support for the areas affected by a massive earthquake, which hit the southern Japan region of Kumamoto on July 28 and triggered strong aftershocks.

“Extensive damage has been confirmed” in the aftermath of the quake, she told the meeting, offering condolences and sympathies to people who have been victimized by the disaster.

“The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has already dispatched LOs (liaison officers) to Kumamoto Prefecture,” Governor Koike said. “Using various channels, including LOs, to accurately assess the needs of the affected municipalities and ensure that necessary support is delivered without delay, I am issuing the following three instructions.”

The governor instructed TMG bureaus to:

  1. Continuously gather information from the national government, Kumamoto Prefecture, relevant municipalities and related organizations, and promptly share it across the TMG,

  2. Closely work together to stay always ready to support the livelihoods of disaster victims—including improving conditions at evacuation shelters, securing water, food and power supplies, and implementing heatstroke prevention measures,

  3. And let the public clearly understand the TMG’s support initiatives, including those under preparation.

“Let us continue to work together as one within the TMG to implement the initiatives that support those affected by the disaster,” Governor Koike said.
