2026 Kumamoto Earthquake Support Coordination Meeting (2nd)

Governor Koike on July 29 attended the second meeting to coordinate Tokyo’s support for the areas affected by a massive earthquake that hit the southern Japan region of Kumamoto on July 28.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government launched the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake support coordination meeting immediately after the quake—which registered the maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale and triggered a series of powerful aftershocks.

Expressing her deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to all people affected by the disaster, the governor said the meeting aimed to prepare each department for relief support under three guidelines.

“First, collect information from every available source and share it quickly across departments,” she said. “Second, prepare personnel and material support so we can respond rapidly and effectively. Third, work across organizational boundaries and use every available means to ensure aid reaches those in need.”

Governor Koike recalled that Tokyo had supported recovery efforts after major disasters that struck Japan in recent decades, including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake and the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

“Drawing on these experiences, let us work together and respond with all our strength. We will work together as one across the entire organization and devote all our resources to tackling the challenges that can only be dealt with by Tokyo,“ she said. “Standing alongside affected communities, we will do everything we can to support recovery and rebuilding.”
