2. Summary of comments made by Governor Koike in her video message
This summer, we hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. Although the pandemic forced the Games to be held under the unprecedented conditions of a one-year postponement and the decision to hold events without spectators, with your support, we were able to make them a success. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude. We are linking the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games to achieving a sustainable recovery from the pandemic.
To confront the major crises, namely the pandemic and climate emergency, currently faced by the world, cooperation between our cities, which are on the frontlines, is becoming even more significant.
In August, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government welcomed participants representing five continents, including the mayors of major cities such as Paris, to the Sustainable Recovery Tokyo Forum or Re StaRT. At the forum, we confirmed that recovery from the pandemic is an opportunity to realize a sustainable recovery. Seeking to build resilient and sustainable societies, brimming with diversity and inclusion, while responding flexibly to changes the coronavirus crisis has brought to society and the perception of values, the forum concluded with the adoption of the Tokyo Declaration on Sustainable Recovery.
Tokyo now plans to launch a new international network for cities to share knowledge and initiatives for achieving a sustainable recovery. Your support for the principles outlined in the Tokyo Declaration would be greatly appreciated.
I sincerely hope today’s discussions will be fruitful and lead to strengthening cooperation between cities for a sustainable recovery.
