Tokyo Honors Shibusawa’s Spirit to Lead a New Economic Era

At the “First Anniversary Ceremony for the New Banknotes” hosted by the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry on July 31, Governor Koike praised Mr. Shibusawa Eiichi’s pioneering entrepreneurial spirit, noting that he was the inaugural chairperson of the Chamber and now features on the new ¥10,000 banknote. Additionally, the governor said Mr. Shibusawa had founded numerous companies that continue to support Japan’s economy and Tokyo’s growth, providing invaluable insights and inspiration. The ceremony was held at Tokyo Kaian hospitality complex in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.

“It's been a whirlwind year since Mr. Shibusawa appeared on the new ¥10,000 banknote,” the governor said, adding that 2025 marks two significant historical milestones: the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 100th anniversary since the beginning of the Showa era. “We are navigating rapid social changes, including rising raw material costs, soaring energy prices, and increasingly frequent natural disasters,” she said.

“Tokyo is currently shaping its strategy for 2050, inspired by Mr. Shibusawa’s vision. Our SusHi Tech Tokyo initiative has grown into one of the largest startup conferences in Asia. We must boldly move forward into a new era and revitalize Japan’s economy with unwavering determination,” the governor added.

She said Tokyo is imbued with the spirit of its great predecessors, such as Mr. Shibusawa and Mr. Goto Shinpei. Mr. Goto, as Minister of Internal Affairs, led the city’s redevelopment following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. “We will carry forward their legacy and build a city that leads the world through bold ideas.” She also spoke about her recent business trip to Washington, D.C., and New York City, stating, “We will continue to proactively foster robust partnerships among cities.”
