Governor Koike Stresses the Importance of Offender Rehabilitation to Realize People’s Safe and Secure Daily Life
At a ceremony held on April 17 to mark the 1st International Day for Community Volunteers, Governor Koike said “To realize people’s safe and secure daily life free from crime and to build a society where everyone can play their role actively, offender rehabilitation is extremely important.”
The ceremony of the 75th Campaign to Give Society a Brighter Future and the 1st “International Day for Community Volunteers Supporting Offender Reintegration” was organized by the Tokyo Federation of the Associations of Volunteer Probation Officers and the Shinjuku city’s committee to promote the campaign.
She went on to say, “Cooperation among countries to raise international awareness of activities of community volunteers, including volunteer probation officers, known as Hogoshi in Japan, is quite meaningful to realize a society in which no one is left behind.”
The governor then added “As it is the International Day of Community Volunteers for Offenders Rehabilitation today, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will light up its main building in yellow, in tune with the symbol associated with the campaign, also known as ‘Yellow Feather Campaign.’”
“Let’s join hands and continue to march together to realize a safer, more secure, more vibrant, and more inclusive society where no one is left behind,” she emphasized.
Noting that the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 and the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics are to be held this year, she said, “On the occasion of these sports events delivering dreams and hopes to the people, we would like to move on more vigorously than ever to create an inclusive society where everyone will respect each other.”
