CDP’s CEO Visits Governor Koike to Commend Tokyo for Being Named to the Cities A List for 4 Years in a Row
Ms. Sherry Madera, Chief Executive Officer of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), paid a courtesy call to Governor Koike on June 5 to commend Tokyo for being named to the 2024 Cities A List for environmental transparency and leadership. They also exchanged views on how to advance measures to cope with climate change.

As it was last year, Tokyo is the only A-list municipality in Japan named by the global non-profit environmental organization. And it marks the fourth consecutive year for Tokyo to be named to the top-ranking list.
The governor said, “The world is facing a climate crisis, and decarbonization has become a matter of urgency. It is local governments that must promote decarbonization on the front line as we are the ones to be affected most.” She then emphasized, “It is critically important to protect the lives, health, and property of the citizens of Tokyo and the Japanese people at large.”
The governor informed Ms. Madera, "We have established a new objective to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over 60% compared to the levels in 2000 by 2035, to achieve zero emissions by 2050."
“To reach these goals, Tokyo plans to use next-generation solar cells originating in Japan and introduce GW-class floating offshore wind farms near the Izu Islands. By the same token, Tokyo will host the World Athletics Championships in September and the Deaflympics in November as ecological and compact events,” the governor emphasized.
The governor added: “We will maintain our participation in the CDP City and collaborate with its Japan chapter, thereby strategically advancing all initiatives. We will also aim to become a model for decarbonized cities in the global community.”
Noting that it is challenging for a city to achieve this in the first place, Ms. Madera congratulated Tokyo on having been recognized for this status for four consecutive years. Being the only A-list city in Japan, Tokyo is a leader in the region, CDP’s CEO emphasized.
“We also know that Governor Koike is always thinking of ways to innovate. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in the years to come,” Ms. Madera said.
