Applications Open for the King Salmon Project through Pilots at BAT ～Supporting globally ambitious startups through an on-the-ground pilot program in New York City～

In November 2024, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to strengthen collaboration and foster the continued development of both cities as leading global hubs for business and innovation.

As part of this partnership, TMG, NYCEDC, and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) are launching the King Salmon Project through Pilots at BAT, a pilot demonstration program in New York City that provides climate tech startups with access to real-world infrastructure to validate and scale technologies in New York City's urban environment. The Pilots at BAT program is part of BATWorks, a cutting-edge climate innovation hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. BATWorks serves as the anchor of a growing innovation ecosystem along New York Harbor, supporting climate technologists, entrepreneurs, and talent developing, testing, and deploying solutions to reduce emissions and address the impacts of climate change.

1. Program Overview

The King Salmon Project through Pilots at BAT provides climate tech and other innovative startups with opportunities to conduct pilot demonstrations at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in New York City. Through collaboration between TMG, NYCEDC, and LACI, participating startups gain access to BAT’s infrastructure, along with tailored support to accelerate pilot implementation and facilitate global expansion.

2. Eligibility

One startup will be selected through a document review and interview process

3. Program Benefits (Up to 12 Months) 

(1) Support Provided by NYCEDC and LACI

• Access to infrastructure at Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) for pilot demonstrations
• Technical support related to permitting, local equipment and facilities, and pilot implementation
• Regular mentoring sessions of up to one hour per week 
• Publication of a case study demonstrating pilot outcomes

(2) Support Provided by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government

• Assistance in pilot projects in New York City
• Financial support for pilot demonstrations and international travel

4. Application Timeline

Please be sure to submit your application by the deadline for Step 1. Steps 2 and onward will be administered by LACI.

• Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) is a 4 million square foot modern industrial campus located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, in New York City and is home to over 100 businesses and over 3,500 jobs.
