FY2026 Joint Comprehensive Disaster Drill with Edogawa Ward

From July 3 to 5, 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government conducted a joint comprehensive disaster drill with the Edogawa Ward at Hirai Sports Park and other locations. Governor Koike attended an emergency response headquarters exercise at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building on July 3 and participated in a search and rescue exercise at Hirai Sports Park on July 5.

Following the rescue exercise, the governor commented:

In recent years, various disasters, including extreme heatwaves and earthquakes, have occurred with increasing frequency around the world. Japan has also experienced a series of disasters across the country. Against this backdrop, we conducted this year's comprehensive disaster drill in collaboration with Edogawa Ward. The drill, reflecting the area’s geographical characteristics, was based on a scenario of a large-scale storm and flood disaster in Tokyo’s Eastern Lowland Area.

Representatives from three overseas cities, Seoul, Taipei, and New Taipei City, participated in the drill. In addition, disaster management officials from Dubai attended as observers. The exercise provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge and expertise on disaster preparedness and response.

To protect the lives and livelihoods of residents, we will continue to strengthen Tokyo's resilience through both preparedness measures, such as disaster drills, and infrastructure improvements, including the development of regulating reservoirs and trunk sewer systems.

Preparedness in normal times is essential for effective disaster response. I encourage everyone to use today's drill as an opportunity to further enhance their own disaster preparedness.
