Results of Surveys on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (Quick Report)
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is pleased to announce the release of a quick report of the results of the Survey on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (conducted in October 2021) and the Survey on the Awareness of Individuals with Impairments about Sports Activities (conducted in June and September 2021). These surveys were conducted to gain a better understanding of the sports participation rate*1 among Tokyo residents, one of the TMG Policy Targets for 2030 set in Future Tokyo: Tokyo’s Long-Term Strategy to effectively develop measures for the promotion of sports.
*1 Sports participation rate: Rate of residents who have been involved in sports and exercise activities once or more per week for the past one year. This survey targeted the one-year period to the date of the survey.

Sports participation rate among Tokyo residents: 68.9% (Increased by 8.5% from the previous survey)
Reasons for participating in sports and exercise
- Health maintenance, Physical strength development 73.8%
- Lack of exercise 66.2%
Sports and exercise in the past one year
- Walking, Taking a walk 80.6%
- Calisthenics 53.6%

*The survey method used until 2018 was interview. Please note that the survey has been conducted via postal service or internet since 2020.
Sports participation rate of individuals with impairments: 35.4% (Increased by 3.5% from the previous survey)
Reasons for participating in sports and exercises
- Health maintenance, Physical strength development 65.8%
- Lack of exercise 48.1%
Sports and exercise in the past one year
- Walking, Taking a walk 77.2%
- Calisthenics 27.7%

Rate of Tokyo residents interested in Para sports activities*2: 53.0% (Increased by 9.4% from the previous survey)
*2 Rate of Tokyo residents who chose “Very interested in” and “Relatively interested in”.
Reasons for interest in Para sports activities
- Because I watched the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games 68.7%
- Because I watched live, streamed, or reports of Para sports activities via media 43.3%
- Because athletes were attractive 21.5%

3. Other
TMG is analysing the results of both surveys with other survey items and will report between late February and early March 2022.
