Tokyo Skytree Lighting Ceremony: One Month to Go Till World Athletics 2025
Governor Koike attended the ceremony to light up the Tokyo Skytree tower on August 13, marking one month to go until the 2025 World Athletics Championships in the Japanese capital.
The lighting ceremony was hosted by the Local Organizing Committee of the Championships at the Tokyo Skytree Town emporium at the foot of the 634-meter-high broadcasting tower.
Along with Governor Koike, actor Oda Yuji, the special ambassador for the September 13-21 championships, Local Organizing Committee President Ogata Mitsugu, and Tokyo 2025 mascot Riku One appeared on the stage.
“We’re exactly one month out from the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships. Tokyo Skytree was lit up a moment ago in the event’s official color, Edo purple,” the governor told the ceremony.
“Over the nine days, Tokyo will be filled with excitement and fervor,” she said. “I truly look forward to witnessing with my own eyes the breathtaking speed and power of athletes, and how they challenge the limits of human capability at a packed National Stadium.”
“We want to seize this golden opportunity to boost enthusiasm for sports in various ways among people in Tokyo and across the nation,” said the governor. Tokyo is hosting the World Athletics Championships for the second time, the first since 1991.
“At venues like medal stages near Meiji Park and the National Stadium, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is preparing to organize events and offer dynamic content unique to an international sports competition,” Governor Koike noted.
“We want as many people as possible to feel what can only be experienced in Tokyo,” she said. “Let's cheer together, build excitement together, and make this the greatest Championships ever.”
