On Friday, November 25, Governor Koike met with Fabio Azevedo, General Director of the International Federation of Volleyball (FIVB), at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Touching on the success of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, General Director Azevedo said, "I want to make the sport even more of a success at the Tokyo 2020 Games." With respect to the Volleyball venue, he explained that he welcomed construction of the new Ariake Arena venue planned at the bidding stage. However, he also showed understanding toward budget-related issues and Tokyo's changing situation. "I want to cooperate to cut costs by improving and simplifying the venue plans, and other means. It is very important that Volleyball be played in the center of Tokyo," said the general director.

Concerning preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Games, the governor explained that a comprehensive decision that takes into account two issues—the shape of Tokyo following the Games and the overall success of the Games—must be made. With regard to the Volleyball venue, the governor said that factors such as lifecycle costs and uses for the facility post-Games were being examined, adding, "We are considering the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games, enjoyment of Volleyball fans, and the value created by the venue as we head toward a new Tokyo in a comprehensive manner. A facility that meets these needs overall is what is required."
