Governor Attends Symposium on Pre-Disaster Reconstruction Planning for Cities

On January 14, Governor Koike attended the “symposium on pre-disaster reconstruction planning for cities for FY2025.”

Governor Koike stated, “I am one of those who experienced the Great Hanshin Earthquake on January 17, 1995. Back then, I realized strongly that during an emergency, everything would become unusable. Recently, earthquakes have been occurring everywhere in the country. I constantly say, ‘Always be prepared,’ calling on people to prepare themselves against disasters.

“Utility poles are a common sight in cities, but when an earthquake strikes, they might fall, damaging homes and blocking roads, preventing fire-fighting trucks and ambulances from reaching victims and preventing them from saving lives. During emergencies, they could become real nuisances. While serving as a Diet member, I took the lead in preparing lawmaker-initiated legislation. After taking office as governor, I have had an ordinance (for placing power lines and cables underground) enacted,” the governor said.

She then emphasized, “It’s too late to act only after a disaster strikes. To protect your loved ones, let’s move forward your disaster preparation plan now.”
