Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games 100 Days to Go Countdown Ceremony
On Sunday, May 16, Governor Koike attended a ceremony marking 100 days to go to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games held in the Main Conference Hall on the fifth floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building. The event was broadcast live over the internet.
After a video of Para athletes who qualified for the Games was played, the unveiling of a monument of the Paralympic symbol, three Agitos, was livestreamed remotely from the first floor. Then, kabuki actor and Para-Sports Ambassador Ichikawa Ebizo performed a traditional dance called Sanbaso. It is said that the dance prays for a bountiful harvest and an end to the spread of disease. The traditional performance is distinguished by its light but dynamic dance and powerful foot stomping to contain evil spirits.
Governor Koike commented: “First and foremost, I want to thank our health care workers who are striving, both day and night, to fight the battle against COVID-19, as well as the residents and businesses of Tokyo for generously cooperating with our infection prevention measures.” “The sight of Para athletes always aiming high gives us courage as we fight the virus. By joining hands with all people involved, I wish to advance preparations for a safe and secure Paralympic Games that will serve as a beacon of hope for many.” “Ichikawa Ebizo’s dynamic performance was very uplifting.”
