Awards Presentation Ceremony for Volunteer Fire Brigades Held
On October 22, Governor Koike attended the “Commendation Presentation Ceremony for Volunteer Fire Brigades for FY2025.”
Governor Koike said, “Members of the volunteer fire brigades have saved many lives during large-scale disasters such as the Great East Japan Earthquake and the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. In response to Typhoons No. 22 and No. 23, which directly struck the Izu Islands one after another recently, you worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of island residents, including urging those living in areas vulnerable to landslides to evacuate. Seeing the volunteer firefighters, who know the area well, rush to the scene promptly must have been a tremendous source of reassurance for people in distress.
“As there are concerns about a major earthquake striking directly beneath the capital, while natural disasters have been occurring more often and intensely than before, the importance of individuals’ disaster preparedness and community bonds of mutual aid continues to grow, let alone public assistance from the government. I ask for your continued support as the cornerstone of “capital defense,” protecting the lives and property of 14 million Tokyo residents, guided by the spirit of ’protecting our own communities ourselves,’” she emphasized.
