Private Projects to Help Foreign Residents Picked, Eligible for Subsidy

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has selected the projects it will subsidize in FY2026, projects that private organizations will implement to support foreign residents.

This subsidy aims to help realize Tokyo as a city where foreign residents can take active roles alongside Japanese citizens by fostering an environment where they can live safely and with peace of mind, while also encouraging their vigorous participation in economic and community activities.

As foreign residents in Tokyo increase in number and become more diverse, the problems they face are becoming ever more diverse and complex. To address them, various private organizations are providing tailored support that leverages their expertise. For FY2026, the TMG has selected 19 projects for subsidizing, with its grant totaling 40 million yen.

One such example is the “comprehensive support project for foreign residents through multi-agency collaboration” by the Shanti Volunteer Assoc., a public-interest incorporated body.

In cooperation with social welfare councils, law firms, and foreign resident coordinators, this project provides extensive support, including legal and livelihood assistance, through such activities as food pantries and consultations.

Another example is the “communication support project for deaf foreign residents in Japan” by the general incorporated body “Nadeshiko Yoriai,” which targets deaf foreigners living in Tokyo.

The project organizes Japanese language classes, provides communication support in sign language, conducts fact-finding surveys on the conditions of deaf foreign residents, disseminates information on social systems with the use of sign language, and offers cultural experiences.
