‘Summer Night Museum’ Eyed at Tokyo’s Cultural Facilities

“Summer Night Museum 2026,” a campaign in which Tokyo’s cultural facilities extend their opening hours on Friday nights, is to be held from August 6 through 28.

This program is organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture to allow people to enjoy the nighttime art experience at six of Tokyo’s cultural facilities.

The six facilities are the Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum (in Ryogoku), the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (Ueno), the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (Shirokanedai), the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Ebisu), the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Kiyosumi Shirakawa), and the Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery (Shibuya).

Opening hours will be extended until 9:00 p.m. at the latest (until 8:00 p.m. at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum). Please note that the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will extend its opening hours every Thursday and Friday.

Music will also be featured during these evening hours, with mini-concerts titled “Museum × Music!”—planned and produced by the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre—to be held once at each facility.

Visitors can enjoy classical concerts by musicians including prize winners of the “Tokyo Music Competition,” as well as performances by young musicians from “GOA+ [Plus].” The dates and times of the mini-concerts vary by venue, so please check the websites for details.

Discounted admission fees are also available: for visitors entering after 5:00 p.m., exhibitions covered by the campaign are free for students, and general visitors and those aged 65 and older can view the exhibitions at a discounted rate comparable to group rates.

The term “students” includes all university students, graduate school students, vocational school students, high school students, and others. Additionally, during the event period, admission to the campaign-covered exhibitions is free at any time for junior high school students and younger people (proof of age/student identity required).
