Governor's Video Message for 2026 International Women's Day
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has made the promotion of women's empowerment one of its top priorities and is working toward this goal. In celebration of the upcoming International Women's Day on March 8, Governor Koike Yuriko addressed the international community in a video, stating that TMG is committed to accelerating its efforts for women’s advancement and creating a bright future where everyone can shine.
About the Yellow Light-Up
In tribute to the mimosa flower, the symbol of International Women's Day, the TMG No. 1 Building and other locations will be illuminated in yellow. In addition, municipalities across Tokyo will host their own yellow light-up events, creating a citywide display for everyone to enjoy.
About International Women’s Day (IWD)
First observed by the United Nations (UN) on March 8, 1975, IWD originated in the labor movements of the early twentieth century in North America and throughout Europe. It was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 1977. IWD advocates for ending discrimination and advancing women’s status.
Message from the Governor
March 8 is International Women’s Day. Women, who make up half of the world’s population, are a powerful force for changing the world. An environment that enables women to shine allows everyone to shine, men included, greatly propelling society forward.
With the aim to create a society where both men and women can play active roles, under the banner of “Women in Action” or “WA” for short, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to expand the circle of women’s empowerment across Japan.
Furthermore, under Japan’s first ordinance for the promotion of women’s empowerment, we will vigorously work to promote the creation of an environment that allows women to reach their full potential in the workplace.
I am confident that building an environment that allows everyone to excel will contribute to Tokyo and Japan’s growth and to the realization of a sustainable society.
Let’s all work together to create a Tokyo where people can fulfill their potential.

About Women in Action (WA)
To create a prosperous and diverse society amidst a declining population, it is essential to maximize the power of women, who make up half of society. To extend the circle of female success beyond Tokyo and across Japan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will designate the various ongoing initiatives as "Women in Action" (WA) and generate momentum.
