Will feature the Sanno, Kanda, and Sanja Festivals – icons of Edo-Tokyo! Rakugo storyteller Taihei Hayashiya to join Opening Ceremony on September 12
The performance event Japanese Festival “omatsuri” (Tokyo Wasshoi) featuring festivals and performing arts groups from across Tokyo, will be held from Friday, September 12 to Sunday, September 14 on Gyoko-dori Avenue in front of Tokyo Station.
This year’s program will feature the “Edobashi-kai” from the Sanno Matsuri of Hie Shrine, one of Edo’s renowned Tenka Matsuri, as well as the “Jinja Mikoshi” from the Kanda Matsuri of Kanda Myojin, also a Tenka Matsuri. In addition, the community associations “Asakusa Senwa Chokai” and “Asakusa Machiichichokai,” guardians of Asakusa Shrine’s Sanja Matsuri —an iconic tradition long upheld by Tokyo’s downtown communities—will join the line-up.
Also confirmed to perform are the “Japan Mikoshi Association”, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Japanese culture and organizes the annual “Oedo Mikoshi Matsuri,” as well as the “Hizato Shishimai Hozonkai”, which safeguards the Hinohara Village’s Hizato Shishimai lion dance—designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
On the first day of the event, Friday, September 12, Rakugo storyteller Taihei Hayashiya, who serves as the "TOKYO Wasshoi Ambassador," will appear on the special stage at the opening ceremony.
Various attractions of the festivals will also be introduced at the opening ceremony, and there will be performances by the Edo Shobo Kinenkai (Edo Fire Brigade Memorial Association) featuring Kiyari, Matoiburi and Hashigonori.
Please enjoy to the fullest the unique festivals of Tokyo and the profound depth of the unique Edo culture.
