Governor Koike's Video Message for International Women's Day
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has made the promotion of women's empowerment one of its top priorities and is working toward this goal. On March 8, in celebration of International Women's Day, Governor Koike Yuriko addressed the international community in a video, stating that TMG is committed to its efforts for women’s advancement and creating a bright future where everyone can shine.
About International Women’s Day (IWD)
First observed by the United Nations (UN) on March 8, 1975, IWD originated in the labor movements of the early twentieth century in North America and throughout Europe. It was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 1977. IWD calls for the elimination of discrimination against women and the advancement of women.
Message from the Governor
March 8 is International Women's Day, symbolized by the yellow flowers of the mimosa. This year, for the first time, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building will be lit up in the bright color of mimosa blossoms.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is currently promoting the Women in Action (WA) project. “WA” means circle in Japanese, and we are expanding the circle of women’s activities throughout the country.
To set an example ourselves, we are thoroughly reviewing the work style and the support to help our employees achieve a better work-life balance. By creating a comfortable work environment for both men and women, we will produce more and more female leaders.
Let's work together to create a harmonious society where everyone can play an active role. I hope to create a future where people can shine even brighter.

About Women in Action (WA)
To create a prosperous and diverse society amidst a declining population, it is essential to maximize the power of women, who make up half of society. To extend the circle of female success beyond Tokyo and across Japan, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will designate the various ongoing initiatives as "Women in Action" (WA) and generate momentum.
