KEEP TOKYO CLEAN Year-Round Campaign Kicks off in Shibuya

To help maintain a clean and attractive city, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), in collaboration with diverse stakeholders including municipalities, businesses, and organizations, has launched the TOKYO Cleanup Action initiative under the slogan “KEEP TOKYO CLEAN.”

To kick off this initiative, an opening event was held at Omotesando Hills on August 22, 2026. Attended by Governor Koike Yuriko, the event featured talk sessions on cleanliness and sustainability, hands-on workshops, and exhibits showcasing the latest technologies.

Visitors had the opportunity to learn about efforts to keep Tokyo clean and promote recycling through demonstrations of smart bins that make waste sorting more engaging, autonomous litter-picking robots, and workshops using recycled materials.

Governor Koike commented, “If everyone embraces the mindset of not littering and starts with what they can do, this initiative will continue to evolve. It is the power of each individual that drives this change. The accumulation of small actions will ultimately lead to a cleaner Tokyo, and that message can be shared with the world. Let’s all work together to keep Tokyo clean while having fun.”

Going forward, TMG will work with municipalities and businesses to carry out targeted campaigns and awareness-raising activities across Tokyo. The KEEP TOKYO CLEAN message will be promoted through collaborations with commercial facilities and major events, the initiative's dedicated website, and online videos.

As part of the campaign, the KEEP TOKYO CLEAN furoshiki were distributed to visitors. Through the traditional Japanese wrapping cloth, the initiative promotes the spirit of mottainai, encouraging people to value resources and contribute to a more sustainable society.
