Governor Koike Attends a Meeting of the Study Group to Discuss How to Collect and Utilize CO2
Governor Koike attended the first meeting of the “study group to discuss ways to capture and utilize CO2” held in Shinjuku City on June 27, 2025.
At the meeting held at Shinjuku NS Building, the governor said, “We are currently experiencing that climate change is, indeed, undergoing constant ‘changes.’ As the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to achieve zero emissions by 2050, we have set the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2000 levels by 2035, with a focus on achieving carbon half by 2030 and looking further beyond. We want to accelerate the green transformation (GX) further.”
“Globally, carbon recycling—a process of collecting CO2 from the atmosphere and factories and using it to create new products—is already underway. I think not only reducing CO2 but also utilizing it to create new value, or turning ‘a crisis into a chance,’ is an area where Japan excels,” she emphasized.
“Through this study group, we would like to attempt to create a carbon-recycling model for cities by sharing advanced examples and receiving opinions. We will aim to work together with this group to realize a decarbonized city that will serve as a global model,” the governor said.
