Charting a New Course: Waterfront Renewal and Innovation along the Nihonbashi River
On May 12, Governor Koike and Mr. Nakano Hiromasa, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, inspected the Nihonbashi River area by boat. They observed the ongoing underground construction of the planned Metropolitan Expressway beneath the river. They then discussed the national project to integrate rivers with towns across the country and Tokyo’s efforts to develop lively waterfront areas and water transportation systems.
After the inspection, Governor Koike stated, "Construction work on the undergrounding of the Metropolitan Expressway is in full swing in this area. I noticed a clear change in the scenery from the boat. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is developing vibrant waterfront areas around the Nihonbashi River and revitalizing water transportation. I have also seen initiatives that aim to use the river as a resource to manage the flow of people during crises and mitigate traffic congestion."
