On February 8, 2022, Governor Koike delivered a speech titled “Tokyo’s Future and This Year’s Outlook” to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ). Her talk began with how Tokyo is working to control the spread of COVID-19 through direct and indirect countermeasures.
Topics included
- New measures to control the spread of COVID-19, and to provide care to those who have been infected. These include delivery of pulse oximeters for people recovering at home, as well as the provision of food and other supplies.
- Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, recalling the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games and the inspiration they gave to viewers.
- Coming anniversary celebration of the 2020 Games, and the legacy of the Games. In particular, the legacy of the Paralympics for Tokyo to become a truly barrier-free inclusive society.
- The goal of creating an environment in which women play an active role, expanding business and leadership opportunities through the APT Women (Acceleration Program in Tokyo for Women) and other initiatives.
- Tokyo’s “carbon-half” goal and decarbonization by 2050, increasing green energy sources such as solar panels on new houses and hydrogen infrastructure in the former Olympic and Paralympic Village. Also, promotion of the Tokyo Bay eSG project.
- Tokyo’s aim to become a Global Financial City. The keywords are “green” and “digital”. “Green” includes the Tokyo Green Finance Initiative (TGFI) and the Social Impact Investment Fund, which will support environmental and social sustainability. “Digital” includes improved emergency response, the Tokyo Digital Twin Project, and greater use of smart water meters in homes to track water usage and potential problems.
- Chōju (Longevity) measures to support better quality of life for elderly, including more home devices to track and monitor health.
