FUROSHIKI TOKYO Exhibit
On Monday, October 14, Governor Koike attended the FUROSHIKI TOKYO Exhibit, which was held as part of NIHONBASHI MEGURU FES, an event to promote the culture and assets of Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district.
Governor Koike participated in a talk show with designer Koshino Hiroko and demonstrated how to use one furoshiki cloth to wrap items such as a set of two wine bottles and a soccer ball. Ms. Koshino commented, “When you exchange gifts wrapped in furoshiki, the manner in which you select a furoshiki with a particular pattern really conveys the thought associated with the gift. This is the power of design.” The Governor added her thoughts, saying, “Just a few days ago, Typhoon No. 19 made a direct hit on the Kanto region. And, even as we speak, some areas continue to suffer from serious damage caused by the storm. Looking at this typhoon, it is clear that the stage of learning about climate change has already passed, and it is now time to take action. Water resistant furoshiki not only help to reduce plastic use, they can also play a useful role in times of emergency. The Tokyo 2020 Games are a major opportunity to promote information from Tokyo. I hope to use this occasion to spread Japanese traditions, culture, and technologies.”
