Urban 20 (U20)
The U20 is a city diplomacy initiative established on December 12, 2017, by the Mayor of Buenos Aires and the Mayor of Paris, who was the Chair of the C40 Group at that time, in collaboration with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Based on the recognition that cities play an important role in creating a sustainable and inclusive world, U20 brings together major cities from G20 member states to discuss global challenges, form a common position and produce recommendations for consideration by the G20. Tokyo joined the U20 on January 24, 2018. The U20 is one of the G20 Engagement Groups.
Seventh Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, November 14-17, 2024)
With Brazil holding the 2024 G20 presidency, the seventh U20 Mayors Summit, co-chaired by the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, was held in Rio de Janeiro on November 14-17, and the communiqué was released and delivered as a message to the 2024 G20.
Sixth Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit Ahmedabad (Gujarat State, India, July 7-8, 2023)
With India holding the 2023 G20 presidency and the city of Ahmedabad chairing the sixth U20 Mayors Summit, the summit was held in the Gandhinagar District of Gujarat State on July 7-8, and the communiqué was released and delivered as a message to the 2023 G20.
Fifth Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit (Jakarta, Indonesia, August 30-31, 2022)
With Indonesia holding the 2022 G20 presidency, the city of Jakarta and West Java province co-chaired the fifth U20 Mayors Summit. The summit was held in Jakarta on August 30-31, as a hybrid conference with online and in-person participation, and the communiqué was delivered as a message to the 2022 G20.
◆CommuniquéFourth Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit (Rome, Italy, September 3, 2021)
With Italy assuming the 2021 G20 Presidency, the fourth U20 Mayors Summit was held in Rome on September 3 as a hybrid conference with online and in-person participation, and the communiqué was delivered as a message to the G20.
◆CommuniquéThird Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit (Riyadh, September 30- October 2, 2020)
With the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia assuming the 2020 G20 Presidency, Tokyo transferred the U20 Chairmanship to the capital of the Kingdom, Riyadh, on December 1, 2019. The third U20 Mayors Summit was held virtually by Riyadh on September 30-October 2, 2020. The communiqué was released and handed over to the G20 on the final day of the Summit.
Second Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit (Tokyo, May 20-22, 2019)
While Japan held the 2019 G20 Presidency, Tokyo served as the 2019 U20 chair city and hosted the U20 Mayors Summit. Mayors of participating cities were invited to the U20 Mayors Summit to discuss issues common to global cities, and delivered the communiqué to Abe Shinzo, Prime Minister of Japan.
