On August 28, 2026, Governor Koike met with Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee.
Reflecting on the fifth anniversary of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the governor said, “The memories of the Games, and the way the athletes challenged themselves and overcame obstacles, remain vividly etched in the minds of many people.”
She continued, “Last year, Tokyo hosted the Deaflympics. It was a wonderful event that carried forward the legacy of the Paralympics.”
“Through technologies for universal communication and by developing environments that provide easy access to information, we are steadily building on the legacy of the 2020 Paralympics and demonstrating enhanced diversity in Tokyo.”
Mentioning that Tokyo will host a qualifying event for the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games next year, she expressed confidence in the growing interest in Para sports.
“We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with President Parsons and the IPC to further advance an inclusive society and make Para sports even more widely embraced by everyone,” she said.
