Celebrating the Centenarian Sushi Chef
On September 18, Governor Koike visited Mr. Ono Jiro (born October 27, 1925), ahead of his 100th birthday, at his renowned sushi restaurant.
Mr. Ono, the founder of Sukiyabashi Jiro in Ginza, has received numerous honors, including the title of a Contemporary Master Craftsman from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Medal with Yellow Ribbon , and recognition by the Guinness World Records as the oldest head chef of a three-Michelin-star restaurant, at age 93 years and 128 days.
The governor remarked, "I was truly looking forward to meeting the person revered as the ‘god’ of Edomae sushi, a symbol of Tokyo and Edo's globally celebrated food culture. I deeply respect your lifelong dedication to mastering traditional techniques and passing them on to many apprentices.”
She added, “We now live in an era of 100-year lifespans. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to realize an ‘Active Chōju Society’ where seniors live vibrant, fulfilling lives. The continued contributions of energetic seniors like Jirō-san are a great source of inspiration for Tokyo residents. I would love to hear your thoughts and your message to the younger generation."
Following her remarks, the two enjoyed a warm conversation, exchanging views on topics such as the secrets to good health.
