Department stores and shops line the streets around Machida Station. Pass through a bustling shopping street and continue walking northeast for about 15 minutes through a residential area to find a large wooded area. This is the Serigaya Park, a park with rich nature that makes the most of the different elevations of the hollow where it is located. The 140,000m2 park, which stretches from north to south, provides plenty of things for people of all ages, from children to adults, to enjoy: two open multipurpose fields featuring Somei Yoshino cherry trees, an adventure field with playground equipment including a big 46-meter-long slide, and more.

On the south side of the park, you will find the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts, a stately brick building with a bright atrium lobby. As one of the few museums in the world dedicated to print art, the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts collects and conserves documents and superb print works by both Japanese and overseas artists, including Rembrandt, Picasso, and Yokoo Tadanori. The museum’s extensive collection numbers over 32,000. Quarterly exhibitions, where the attractions and techniques of print art are explained from unique angles, as well as free mini-exhibitions, are held, providing visitors with the opportunity to view various types of print art, from the popular ukiyo-e prints to modern art prints.

The museum also gives you an opportunity to experience the joy of making prints. At the print studio and atelier set up inside the museum, courses and workshops are regularly held for those who wish to learn printmaking techniques such as etching, lithography, woodcut, and screenprinting. Some people travel from far away to attend them.

Under the concept of a “park museum,” redevelopment of Serigaya Park, which is located close to the center of town, has now begun. As part of this initiative, the Machida City Museum of Crafts (tentative name) is scheduled to open next to the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts in fiscal 2025. Come and discover nature and art to enrich yourself.
