Results of Surveys on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (Quick Report)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) is pleased to announce the release of a quick report of the results of the Survey on Tokyo Residents’ Involvement in Sports Activities (conducted in October 2022) and the Survey on the Awareness of Individuals with Impairments about Sports Activities (conducted in September 2022). These surveys were conducted to gain a better understanding of the sports participation rate* among Tokyo residents, one of the TMG Policy Targets for 2030 set in Future Tokyo: Tokyo’s Long-Term Strategy to effectively develop measures for the promotion of sports.
* Sports participation rate: Rate of residents (aged 18 or older) who have been involved in sports and exercise activities once or more per week for the past one year. This survey targeted the one-year period to the date of the survey.

Sports participation rate among Tokyo residents: 65.9% (Decreased by 3.0% from the previous survey)
Reasons for participating in sports and exercise
- Health maintenance, Physical strength development 75.3%
- Lack of exercise 62.1%
- Fun, recreation and relaxation 54.7%
Sports and exercise in the past one year
- Walking, Taking a walk 79.4%
- Calisthenics 51.1%

*The reasons for participating in sports and exercise from the previous survey: Health maintenance, Physical strength development (73.8%), Lack of exercise (66.2%), and Fun, recreation and relaxation (57.8%).
Sports participation rate of individuals with impairments: 35.2% (Decreased by 0.2% from the previous survey)
* Sports participation rate of individuals aged 7 to 17 was 40.0%. (New survey)
Reasons for participating in sports and exercises
- Health maintenance, Physical strength development 65.2%
- Lack of exercise 45.8%
Sports and exercise in the past one year
- Walking, Taking a walk 76.0%
- Calisthenics 26.2%

Rate of Tokyo residents interested in Para sports activities*: 43.2% (Decreased by 9.8% from the previous survey)
* Rate of Tokyo residents who chose “Very interested in” and “Relatively interested in”.
Reasons for interest in Para sports activities
- Because I watched the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games 51.7%
- Because I watched live, streamed, or reports of Para sports activities via media 50.5%
- Because I watched a Para sports event or match (except for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games) 19.2%
