Governor Visits Disaster Relief Vessel ‘Raiden’

On June 29, Governor Koike visited a disaster relief vessel “Raiden” moored at the Ryogoku River Center in Sumida Ward.

The governor stated, “This disaster relief vessel was built to make use of waterborne routes during disasters such as earthquakes, as well as to inspect their landing sites and to deliver emergency supplies. While it incorporates sophisticated features designed for disaster relief, it can also be used in peacetime, for example, for disaster drills and to help people learn about disaster preparedness and the waterfront environment. I hope Tokyo residents will make use of it, not only to enjoy themselves but also to learn about disaster preparedness, including how to prepare mentally.

“In the sense that water transportation has supported the economy and people’s lives since the Edo period, I believe it is a mode of transportation with great potential for continued use in the future,” she said.
