Tokyo, Fukushima, Hokkaido, and Denmark Jointly Make "Clean Energy Declaration"

Governor Koike attended on April 23 the “energy event to commemorate the visit to Japan of H.M. the King of Denmark,” hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy. During the event, Denmark, and Tokyo, Fukushima and Hokkaido prefectures jointly made the “Clean Energy Declaration,” vowing to deepen global cooperation in promoting renewable energies.

The event, held at the Meiji Kinenkan in Tokyo, was also attended by Fukushima Governor Uchibori Masao, Hokkaido Vice Governor Mitsuhashi Tsuyoshi, Ambassador of Denmark to Japan Jarl Frijs-Madsen, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Denmark Uyama Hideki.

Governor Koike said, “First and foremost, I am sincerely delighted that His Majesty King Frederik X has come to Japan. I would like to express my gratitude for this opportunity for the Kingdom of Denmark, and Tokyo, Fukushima, and Hokkaido prefectures jointly making the 'Clean Energy Declaration.'”

“The global average temperature in 2024 reached a record high, marking a record for two consecutive years. Some have even used such an expression as ‘global boiling,’ going beyond the term of global warming. That makes it even more crucial to achieve net zero emissions by 2050,” she pointed out.

Governor Koike then stated, “We have set our target to reduce carbon emissions by half by 2030, and even by looking beyond, a new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60% by 2035, both compared to 2000 levels.”

“To achieve them, it is necessary to make renewable energy resources our core energies. Therefore, Tokyo will strategically deploy all sorts of efforts such as achieving maximum energy efficiency, realizing a hydrogen society, and promoting green transformation (GX), thereby creating a decarbonized city that will serve as a model for the world,” she said.

“The climate crisis has become ever more serious across the world, making a multi-level collaboration indispensable. We would like to deepen our cooperation globally, share our knowledge, and further strengthen our efforts,” she emphasized.
