Tokyo selected to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships (Comments by the Governor of Tokyo)
At a meeting of the World Athletics (WA) Council held today, July 15, 2022 (JST), Tokyo was selected to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
In response to the decision, the Governor has made the following comments.
Governor Koike’s comments
I am delighted and honored that Tokyo was chosen to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. This will be the second time for Tokyo to host the event since the 1991 World Championships.
The World Championships are the world’s premier athletics competition, which bring together 2,000 top athletes from over 200 countries and regions. This will be an excellent opportunity for many citizens of Tokyo to see world-class athletes engaged in heated competition up close and to cheer them on at the Japan National Stadium.
In addition, through the interaction with athletes and the opportunity to witness competitions created by this event, we can give our children, who are our future, the inspiration and courage generated by sports. Furthermore, it is a wonderful opportunity for Tokyo to promote its diverse attractions and enhance its global presence.
Utilizing the expertise we have cultivated in organizing and running international sports events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will actively work with everyone involved for the success of the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
