Comments by Governor Koike Yuriko on the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
Governor Koike Yuriko has made the following comments on the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games held today.
Governor Koike’s comments
Today, the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games was held at Olympic Stadium. The support and cooperation of the athletes and people around the world made the Olympic Games, which concluded two weeks ago, an amazing event that will live on in the hearts of many. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the people of Tokyo and Japan who supported us and to everyone involved.
And, now, the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games are finally here.
Tokyo is the first city in the world to host the Summer Paralympic Games for the second time. From the start, we have emphasized that the Tokyo 2020 Games will not be a success without the success of the Paralympic Games. And, in preparation for the Games, we have worked to further advance initiatives for an inclusive society. These include firm introduction of barrier-free measures, both physical and non-physical, and the promotion of social inclusion in which people support each other.
These efforts were accelerated by none other than the attractiveness of para sports. The great radiance of the Paralympians, who hold unlimited potential, will surely deliver immeasurable courage to the world as we face the challenge of the pandemic. I am certain that the excitement that we share through para sports will contribute to realizing a truly inclusive society that recognizes diversity and transcends all differences. We will also devote our resources to linking the Paralympic legacy to sustainable recovery, and present a new model for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Your continued support and cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
