Governor Koike’s comments on the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Games
In response to the 24 March agreement to postpone the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Governor has made the following comments.
Governor Koike’s comments
Yesterday, again confirming that the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 will not be cancelled, Prime Minister Abe and IOC President Bach agreed to postpone the Games for the safety and peace of mind of the spectators, and reschedule them to take place within about a year, but no later than summer 2021, as well as to keep the name Tokyo 2020. This was approved by the IOC Executive Board.
It was made clear that the Games will not be cancelled, and we now have a more concrete target to aim for. The athletes, who have been concerned about this situation, have also been provided with a goal. I am enormously relieved when I think about the feelings of all who have been working for the Games and all who were so looking forward to Tokyo 2020.
Various initiatives will be needed to overcome COVID-19 and deliver a successful Games next year. Your ongoing support and cooperation is crucial. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will commit all its resources and work closely with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the national government, and other stakeholders to fully prepare for the delivery of a Games that is safe and secure for the athletes, spectators, and everyone.
