Governor meets with the former executive secretary of the UNFCCC
On Tuesday, February 12, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), Governor Koike met with Ms. Christiana Figueres who, as the former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, contributed to the adoption of the Paris Agreement.
Praising the TMG’s environmental initiatives, Ms. Figueres asked the governor to disseminate a message through the Olympic and Paralympic Games about Tokyo’s high air quality and that air pollution measures can also lead to climate change measures.
In response, Governor Koike spoke about the Tokyo Forum for Clean City & Clear Sky held last year with the participation of mayors from major cities around the world. The governor explained that, despite being a mega city, Tokyo is also one of the few cities with potable tap water. She expressed her confidence in Tokyo’s quality of water and air, and said that she will consider sending such a message out to the world at the upcoming Games.
