Governor Attends International Symposium on the Future of Water

On July 28, Governor Koike attended the International Symposium Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Japan’s Water Day and Water Week: “Thinking Future of Water,” held at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Koto Ward. The symposium was honored by the presence of His Majesty the Emperor.

The governor stated, “It is a great honor to hold the ‘International Symposium: Thinking Future of Water’ in the presence of His Majesty the Emperor. As global-scale threats—such as fierce heat waves, frequent torrential rains, and increasingly severe floods—have become a reality, cities are strongly called on to ensure ‘resilience.’ The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has worked out the ‘TOKYO Resilience Project’ and has been promoting improvements to rivers and sewer systems, as well as the development of communities on higher ground.

“In achieving sustainable growth, establishing a sustainable water cycle is essential. We will pass on to future generations the ‘water cycle’ in a sound form—from water sources to water supply systems, sewer systems, rivers, and finally into the sea—that has continued since the Edo period. “And, in collaboration with relevant organizations, both at home and abroad, we will create urban spaces filled with richness and calmness, woven together by abundant greenery and water,” she promised.
