Governor Meets with Newly Elected Nerima Ward Mayor

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko received a visit on June 22 from Yoshida Kenici, who was elected this past April as the mayor of Nerima, one of the capital city’s 23 special wards.

Mayor Yoshida told the governor that his ward is faced with issues including healthcare and the expansion of a road and metropolitan subway network in its western part. “These are not matters that Nerima Ward can address on its own,” he said. “We hope to continue counting on your cooperation on various matters. We would appreciate your continued support.”

Governor Koike congratulated the mayor on his election and noted that his predecessor had contributed to metropolitan government initiatives during his tenure from 2014 to 2026. She said, “Tokyo has seen an increase in the number of births for the first time in 10 years.”

“The former mayor always handled matters very efficiently, whether regarding certified childcare centers or coronavirus countermeasures. And we have such a long-standing relationship with Nerima,” Governor Koike said. “As the wave of a declining birthrate and aging population continues to spread all around, I hope we can work together closely to address these challenges.”
